Used pallet rack is a great option in some situations although, new Pallet rack is always preferred and we strongly recommend purchasing new pallet rack for all applications. However, we understand the budget does not always allow for the purchase of new pallet rack materials. We offer these guidelines to use when considering a purchase of used pallet rack.
Used pallet racks should be visually inspected. Examine welds for cracks. All components should be straight and not dented or twisted in any way.
All major pallet rack manufacturers are members of, and adhere to, the standards set forth by the Rack Manufacturers Institute. When discussing pallet rack damage RMI is quite clear: “Upon any visible damage, the pertinent portions of the rack shall be unloaded immediately by the user and the damaged portion shall be adequately repaired or replaced.”
Once the form of a component is compromised, the load carrying capacity of the member is reduced. Generally, once the pallet rack component has been deformed, particularly in the area of the corner radii, it will no longer carry its rated load. There is no way to judge or calculate the reduction in capacity due to visible damage. As soon as damage occurs, the component twisted or distorted, the rack should be unloaded and the rack member removed and replaced with a new component.
Never purchase used pallet rack that shows any signs of rust.
Most often, Used Pallet Rack is considered a commodity and is sold “as is”. No warranty is offered or implied. It is the responsibility of the end user to both specify to the dealer the required load rating and then verify the delivered components have the capacity that will safely support the loads.
It is quite common for companies to re-use rack components internally within the company. The same guidelines should be utilized.
